ryujinx black screen fix
Switch Ryujinx to the OpenGL backend and update your GPU driver. A black screen at launch is almost always a Vulkan failure, not a missing file.
The game “launches” — Ryujinx says it’s running — but you see nothing. Black screen, no error, sometimes audio still plays. This is almost never the ROM; it’s the render path failing silently.
Why black screens happen here
Ryujinx defaults to Vulkan. If Vulkan can’t present a frame — stale driver, wrong GPU selected, or a game that needs a feature your driver lacks — you get a black screen instead of a crash, because the emulator thinks it’s fine and the GPU simply isn’t drawing.
Fix it in three moves
-
Switch the Graphics API to OpenGLOpen Settings → Graphics and change the API from Vulkan to OpenGL. OpenGL is slower but far more forgiving of driver quirks, and it's the fastest way to confirm the problem is the Vulkan path. The game shows its first frame instead of black.
-
Update your GPU driverIf OpenGL works but Vulkan doesn't, the driver is the culprit. Install the latest driver from the GPU maker, not the generic one Windows pushed.Vulkan works again after the update, so you can switch back for speed.
-
Confirm keys and firmware are presentA few titles sit on a black screen when firmware is missing or mismatched, because they stall before drawing. This looks identical to a render failure but has a different cause. The firmware dialog shows an installed version, and the log stops reporting missing system modules.
When it’s a specific game
Some black screens are per-title and build-specific — Tomodachi Life, for example, has reported a black screen on boot that a newer build resolves. If OpenGL gets you in but the game still shows black, check the Tomodachi Life crashing page or update to a current build.
If the game crashes instead of showing black, that’s a different problem — see the startup crash fix.
