eden emulator crash on startup fix

Quick answer

Update Eden and confirm your GPU drivers, then clear its shader cache. Startup crashes usually come from a stale build or an uninitialised renderer.

Eden crashes the instant you open a game, or it loads partway and dies. The honest answer is that Eden moves fast: most startup crashes are a stale build or a renderer that never finished initialising, not your game files.

1. You’re on an old build

Eden releases frequently. A crash that “just started happening” is often a known issue already fixed in a newer build.

  1. Update to the latest Eden build
Get the current build from the project's own release channel — the official Eden repository is the only source we link. Mirror sites repackage builds and aren't trusted here.
The version string in Settings matches the latest release on the repository.

2. The renderer can’t start

Eden, like the Yuzu line it continues, needs a working graphics backend. If that fails, the crash lands on game load.

  1. Confirm the graphics API and update drivers
Open Settings → Graphics. If Vulkan is selected but your driver is stale, or OpenGL is forced on a machine without a good OpenGL driver, the renderer dies when a game draws. Update the GPU driver from the maker's site.
The log no longer reports a failed graphics device creation.
  2. Try the other backend as a test
If Vulkan black-screens or crashes, switch to OpenGL; if OpenGL is slow but stable, you've confirmed the Vulkan path is the problem and a driver fix will let you switch back.
The game reaches its first frame on the alternate backend.

3. Corrupted cache

  1. Clear the shader cache
A cache written during a crash can make every later boot fail at the same point. Clear it and reopen the game so it recompiles cleanly.
Shaders recompile on first launch instead of loading a broken cache.

Before you blame Eden

Keys and firmware issues look like crashes at the same moment. If Eden reports missing keys or firmware on startup, those are separate fixes — see the prod keys page. Migrating from Yuzu? The Yuzu to Eden guide covers folder placement.
