Steam Deck disk write error
A disk write error on Steam Deck means the card is read-only or corrupt. Check the write lock, repair it in Desktop Mode, then retry the save.
A read-only flip is a safety measure
“Disk write error” means the storage refused a write. On a Deck that is almost always the microSD, and the filesystem has usually remounted itself read-only because it detected corruption. The console does this to stop the damage spreading, which is why installed games still launch while nothing new will install.
Three causes cover nearly every case: the card is genuinely full, the filesystem has errors, or the card’s controller is failing and has locked itself.
Diagnose before you format
- Check free space in Settings → Storage. A full card reports the same error as a broken one.
- Switch to Desktop Mode (Steam → Power → Switch to Desktop).
- Open KDE Partition Manager and look at the card’s mount options. A
roflag confirms it is mounted read-only. - Open a terminal and run
df -hto see whether the card still mounts at all. A card that no longer appears is a hardware problem, not a filesystem one. - Copy anything irreplaceable off the card before repairing — repair can fail on a dying card.
Repair it
In Desktop Mode, unmount the card and run a filesystem check on it. For an ext4 card that is sudo fsck -f /dev/mmcblk0p1, adjusting the device name to match what Partition Manager showed. Answer yes to repairs, then remount.
If the card is exFAT because it is shared with a Windows PC, check and repair it from Windows instead — SteamOS’s tools are unreliable on exFAT.
When formatting is the only option
Reformat only after the data is copied off. On the Deck, Settings → Storage → Format produces a card SteamOS trusts. Avoid formatting on a PC unless you use the Deck’s own tool, because SteamOS expects specific partitions for game installs.
When the card is dying
If the error returns within a day of a successful repair, treat the card as failing. Read-only flips that repeat are the standard end-of-life behaviour for worn flash. Replace it, and keep game installs on the internal drive if the card is only for ROMs.
