8bitdo controller not detected fix

8BitDo 8BitDo pads with mode buttons (SN30 Pro, Pro 2, Ultimate, Zero 2) / Windows 10, Windows 11 Last verified October 2026 Risk: none
Quick answer

Windows can't see your 8BitDo when it's in the wrong input mode. Hold Start plus the mode button for the correct mode, then pair from Bluetooth settings.

8BitDo controllers support several input modes — Switch, Android, Windows, macOS — and they boot in whichever mode they were last used in. A controller in Switch mode can look “not detected” on a PC: the Bluetooth name doesn’t appear, or it pairs but every button is wrong. The fix is almost always the mode, not the driver.

Make Windows see the pad

  1. Find the mode combos for your model
The combos are printed on the back of the controller (or in the manual). The pattern across 8BitDo pads: hold Start, then press a letter — each letter boots a different mode, and your model's exact mapping is on the label.
You know which letter selects the mode for your target device before you start pressing buttons.
  2. Boot the controller in the correct mode
With the controller off, hold Start and press the letter for your platform — Windows mode for PC gaming, Android mode for phones. The LED tells you which mode took effect (the pattern is model-specific; the manual maps LED behavior to modes).
The LED shows the mode you intended, and the controller's Bluetooth name matches that mode — modes often advertise different names.
  3. Pair from Windows Bluetooth settings
Open Windows Settings → Bluetooth → Add device, and pick the name that matches the mode you just selected. Don't pair from Steam first — Steam can grab the controller in the wrong mode.
The controller appears under Settings → Bluetooth as "Connected", and Windows' "Set up USB game controller" dialog shows it responding.
  4. Test in the emulator, not just Windows
Open your emulator's controller settings and confirm every button registers. If buttons are swapped rather than dead, the controller paired in the wrong mode — go back to step 2.
Each button and stick registers in the emulator's input test.

If it still won’t pair

  • Wired test: connect by USB. If it works wired but not over Bluetooth, the problem is the PC’s Bluetooth stack or the controller’s battery — charge fully and retry.
  • Stale pairing: remove the controller from Windows’ Bluetooth list entirely (not just disconnect), then pair fresh. A controller paired under one mode and re-paired under another is the classic cause.
  • Firmware: 8BitDo’s own update tool (from 8bitdo.com) fixes several detection bugs on older units. Use the official tool only.

Mapping once it’s detected

Detection solved, the remaining work is mapping — which button does what per emulator. The controller not detected questions page collects the pairing and lag questions, and the controller mapping guide covers default bindings per emulator.
