console emulator questions
Check what PCSX2, RPCS3, Dolphin, PPSSPP and Citron each run, the best settings for your PC, and fixes for the common crashes and driver faults.
Console emulation is more settled than Switch emulation: each console has a clear best emulator, and the questions are about settings and compatibility rather than survival. This page answers the ones players search for most, from ‘best emulator’ to ‘will it run on my machine’.

What is the best PS2 emulator?
PCSX2 is the PS2 emulator and effectively the only serious one. It's mature and actively developed, and it runs most of the library well on a modern PC. The 'best' part is settings: a low-end PC, a Steam Deck and a high-end desktop each want different Graphics and EE/IOP settings.
What is the best GameCube and Wii emulator?
Dolphin is the one — it handles both GameCube and Wii (including Wii motion controls via emulated or real Wiimotes). It's one of the most polished emulators overall and runs on Windows, Linux, macOS and Android. For these two consoles there's no real alternative to consider.
What is the best PS3 emulator?
RPCS3 is the only PS3 emulator that matters. It's demanding — the PS3's Cell architecture is hard to emulate — so a strong CPU matters more than the GPU. It runs a large chunk of the library but not everything, and per-game settings make or break a title.
Can Dolphin play Wii U games?
No. Dolphin emulates GameCube and Wii only. Wii U is a different, more complex console emulated by Cemu, which is separate. Despite the similar names, Dolphin will not load Wii U titles.
Can Dolphin play PS2 games?
No. Dolphin is GameCube and Wii only. PS2 games need PCSX2. The confusion is common but the two emulators don't overlap — they emulate different hardware.
What are the best PCSX2 settings for a low-end PC or Steam Deck?
Lower the internal resolution to 1x or 2x, use the Vulkan or OpenGL renderer, and set EE/IOP and VU clamp modes to the safer presets. On Steam Deck, 2x with Vulkan is a good baseline; on a weak laptop, 1x and the Software renderer for the hardest titles. Avoid pushing resolution scale past what your GPU can hold at 60fps.
Can I play PCSX2 online?
Some PS2 games support online play through third-party servers and PCSX2's networking, but it's per-game and depends on whether a community still runs the server. It's not a built-in feature for every title — check the specific game's online status rather than assuming it works.
How do PCSX2 cheats work?
PCSX2 loads .pnach cheat files from its cheats folder, and you enable cheats for that game in the emulator's own settings before launching it. The codes themselves come from the PCSX2 community cheat database. We don't host or link cheat packs; the emulator's interface is where they're applied, and a cheat that targets a different game revision can simply fail to take effect.
Can RPCS3 run on Android?
No. RPCS3 is desktop-only — Windows, Linux and macOS. The PS3's complexity makes an Android port impractical in 2026, and none exists. PS3 emulation stays on the desktop.
Can RPCS3 run on Mac?
Yes. RPCS3 ships a macOS build for Apple Silicon and Intel Macs. It's the same emulator as on Windows, with the same high CPU demands — a fast multi-core Mac is needed, and not every title runs as well as on a comparable PC.
Can I add RPCS3 games to Steam?
Yes. You can add RPCS3 (or any emulator) as a non-Steam game and pass the game as a launch argument, so it shows in your Steam library. The emulator's docs cover the exact command line. This is a launcher shortcut, not a Steam verification — the game still runs through RPCS3.
What is Citron, and what are its best settings?
Citron Neo is an open-source fork that continues the Citron codebase, and its README lists Windows, Linux, macOS and Android arm64 builds. The 'best driver' advice is GPU-specific: use the latest vendor drivers and the Vulkan renderer on desktop, and tune accuracy and shader settings per game. Expect rougher edges than Eden or Ryubing — Citron's own README points contributors at its Discord, which is where build behaviour is actually discussed.
What is the best PS1 emulator on PC?
DuckStation is the modern pick for PlayStation 1 — accurate and well-presented. PPSSPP is for PSP, not PS1, despite the similar name. If you're using RetroArch as a front-end, its Beetle/PCSX cores cover PS1 too, but DuckStation standalone is the cleaner experience.
Why does my console emulator crash or stutter?
Stutter is usually shader compilation on first run — it smooths out. Crashes are often a renderer or driver fault, a too-aggressive setting, or a specific game needing different clamp/rounding modes. Update the emulator and GPU drivers first; for PCSX2 specifically, the crash fix covers the common causes.
How do I make a console emulator run a game it won't start?
Confirm you have the right emulator for that console, then check the renderer and clamp settings, clear the shader cache, and update. Many 'won't start' cases are a backend the game doesn't like or a missing BIOS (for systems that need one). The per-emulator fix pages go step by step.
